About Us
The US League of Small Town Mayors was founded with the understanding that small town mayors need easy access to information in plain language that is easy to use on practical matters — issues such as, "how do I get a new fire truck," or "how should I best deal with regulators on a new sewer system," or "what is the best way to work with a large company wanting to locate nearby?".
Mayors need to be able to network with and learn from each other to share experiences that accompany the job of being a small town mayor. However, budgets typically do not exist that allow for small town mayors to travel to seminars, conferences, and conventions. And even if such was possible, too often the needs of the sub-10,000 population centers are utterly overlooked.
Understanding these issues, the US League of Small Town Mayors is creating a web-based center which will allow for collaboration and information sharing among small town mayors across the nation. This website, slated to launch in summer 2009, will:
- Provide small town mayors with the organization for a national voice. This is especially important in that now, more than ever, small town mayors need a voice which speaks to their needs on federal legislation and administrative rule-making that affects their day-to-day operation. Issues such as stimulus funding make having a national voice more important now than ever.
- Provide small town mayors with opportunities to take advantage of economies of scale purchasing and equipment usage.
- Provide an interactive outlet where members may share best practices, ask questions of one another, and actively collaborate on common solutions to common issues.
- Provide a platform that is available and accessible 24/7.
It is not the intention of the League to supplant various existing state or national municipal leagues/organizations; on the contrary, the US League of Small Town Mayors will exist as a respected partner organization.
The League will be conscious of the scarce resources of our small towns and will make every effort to keep costs at a minimum and make maximum use of the Internet to ensure costs are kept in check.
